Nate Wolff's Short Essay of Love

The reasons why I love working rescue squad are different than my driver’s reasons. To me, I thoroughly enjoy not knowing what I am going to be doing for the next 12 or 24 hours. We either do 12 or 24 hour shifts, which is a long time to not have a built in schedule for your day. Usually, I have a schedule for what I am going to do for the day, which gives structure and balance to my life. However, at rescue squad, I could be running calls non stop in obscure locations or I could be bored at the station waiting for a call. Once we get a call, my adrenaline kicks in and I am 100% set on helping my patient to the best of my abilities. After I drop the patient off at the hospital, the feeling of self-satisfaction that I get is indescribable. Furthermore, the feeling I get when the patient or their family thanks me is also difficult to explain. In contrast, my driver, Steve, has different reasons why he does rescue squad. Granted, he is still a compassionate person, he still loves working rescue squad because he gets to drive the ambulance very fast with lights and sirens. To me, nothing is more scary than driving an ambulance. However, to Steve, nothing is more terrifying than patient care. His form of taking care of a patient is driving them safely to the hospital while I physically take care of them in the back. Steve’s form of love for rescue squad made me realize the importance that the role the driver plays. I always took it for granted that we would get to the scene and to the hospital safely; however, it is his love for driving that keeps me and my patients safe.
