The article states 5 rules that should be thought of when dealing with romances in the office, I feel that they are silently enforced. Obviously people don't want to send a "cutsy" IM or email to the wrong person starting unnecessary drama in the work place, they would prefer to keep quiet. While these 5 rules more than likely aren't the only ones that you should consider when thinking about an office romance, they seem to be the most important. They show the broad range of effects that could come from an office romance. In the article a statement from Losee, "'My co-author and I have heard of employees breaking up with people they dated at work by changing their facebook status to Single, and the ensuing storm can result in a lot of interoffice melodrama.'" This alone proves a point that the rule of keeping your private life private is one that should be followed by everyone. Causing problems in the work place probably isn't the best idea, especially if you want to keep your job.
Not everyone out there, whether having been in an office relationship before or not, has to believe what this article is saying. Obviously people are going to have their opinions even if they don't agree with the article. I feel that this article does a very good job at presenting its argument though. For every rule stated in the article there is a statement from the author of Office Mate: Your Employee Handbook for Romance on the Job. If people don't already believe in these "silently enforced" rules of office romances, then this article could do a very good job of persuading them to believing them. It definitely has an affect on people.
i believe that the rules are good for people in relationships at the work place but also i feel when they are at work they should cut out their love life completely and when they get home they can continue their love affair at home. the workplace should be a place where they should act professional and not argue about personal love life.
ReplyDeleteI think these rules are definitely good to keep in mind when one is engaged in an office romance. I think it's important to keep you work life and love life separate to some degree also. Would you really want to see your girlfriend/boyfriend at work all the time anyway.
ReplyDeleteObviously, it seems that it is a good idea for people to keep their work and their love life separate for the most part. When I think about all the things that go on between a husband and wife it makes me uneasy thinking that home issues would be manifesting themselves in the middle of a work environment. That seems so counterproductive to everything that needs to get done in the work setting. These rules keep all of that separate and from infringing upon each other.
ReplyDeleteThese rules are definetly helpful when dealing with an office relationship. I think the main thing is keeping your love life separate from the work place. If a couple can do that, I think their relationship can work out. However, if their is a bad break up, that drama can spill into the work place and negatively affect a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI think these rules are definitely necessary and once i get into the real world, I will definitely follow them. i think it's important to keep your home life and office life separate in order to remain professional
