Group 4 Project

Many have heard the saying, "don't mix your love life with your work place." This saying is accompanied with 5 rules on office romances in this article. There are many speculations as to why office romances are a bad idea, one being that your love life can affect the way you work when you mix it with your work life whether in a negative or positive way. We found this article while searching through Yahoo's weekly featured articles. Many of the comments on this article are completely agreeing with what it has to say whether from experience or from being cheated on by their partner involving someone from their work place. Others are disagreeing with the article claiming that anyone can slip up and there is no easy way to hide an office romance.

This article focuses on the main reasons why it would be a bad idea to participate in an office romance. A couple who are fighting in their personal life would be severely affected in the work place by their attitudes towards each other. In turn this would be a negative impact on their work life possibly causing them problems with their boss as well. Sending a "love" text, email, or even IM to the wrong person could get you in a bit of trouble too. This is a precaution you should take if you decide to partake in an office romance and another reason why you shouldn't partake in one. Most companies monitor anything sent or received through their servers and don't have to inform the employees when they decide to do so. With this in mind, anything that you send or receive could be seen by someone you never wanted to know details on your love life.

While reading the article http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/5-rules-for-office-romance-2462128 "5 Rules for Office Romance," we would like you to think of the ways that this could affect one's ability to love or change their perspective on love. Do you feel separating your love life from work would weaken a relationship if it were serious or make it stronger? Do you believe the information in this article to be true? How does a personal networking website affect relationships in the workplace? Would these rules lower someone's capability to love if they've only ever had office romances?

  1. I feel that office romances are a bad idea. Mostly because if the relationship fails a "revenge" factor may come into play causing a less productive or subpar preformance due to not picking your ex since you broke up. It also works in an opposite way as if you were chossing them just because your dating even though someone else is more qualified than them.

  2. I feel like most office romances are lustful, and not love, and therefore separating your "love life" from work would not weaken a relationship, but would make it stronger. If you are interacting only during work, and do not interact outside of work past lust and sex, then the relationship will fail and fall apart. On the otherhand, if you interact a lot outside of work, then you can discover each other's interests and get to know them better than just talking about work.

  3. I agree with the rule "don't mix up work and love". I believe human is very selfish creature. Even though they try keep their relationship cool, all those social network site cannot keep it cool. Of course it sucks because we have to control our emotions, but since work and love is totally different field, I think we have to follow the rule of office.

  4. I think that it's important to seperate the workplace from you're relationship. if you can keep things professional, i don't see a problem with allowing dating among associates at your job. I know from first hand experience how facebook can cause tension in a relationship. I think that every girl has gone on her boyfriend's facebook and seen a girl write a comment....and then immediately stalk her page to make comparisons and critique her. Overall, I found this article very interesting and I think that those 5 tips are helpful and should be kept in mind if anyone decides to date someone that they work with.

  5. I beleive a relationship can begin in any situation, personal or work related. It is more how society treats or views these relationships that makes them seem undesirable. A stereotypical example is a couple who have been married for numerous years and the wife finds out that her husband was cheating on her with someone at work. Now cheating is by no means acceptable and should not be practiced but if one is single before starting a relationship at work then I do not think this would be a problem. Starting a relationship in the workplace does affect your behavior at work but it is how you let it control your life that determines if the outcome will be desirable or not. Having a relationship at work could make things easier in a way because at home you would always have something to talk about. In terms of Facebook and other networking websites, these tend to affect how we see the other person. Many times this is our way of communicating with the significant other and it only takes little dislikes/critiques to start a fight or end a relationship. This would not lower someones capeablility to love but rather change how they love.

  6. I believe most of this information to be true. I like to think that there is a time and a place for everything, including love and work. I feel like if you're constantly around a lover in the work place, you will never be able to concentrate on your work. All, or at least most, of your attention will be diverted from work to the person causing a lack of work ethic. If you do find yourself in love with a co-worker, their suggestion to keep it private and separate is probably the best bet for your wellbeing.

  7. What I think makes this article different from many other articles is that I feel it's targeted to both men and women, rather than just a single gender. The article is written by a woman, but mentions relationships from both a male and female point of view.

  8. I think that this was a good to[pic. I feel like the audience would be towards men and women in their late twenties to mid thirties. Those are the people that i think of when I think of currently dating or looking for someone to marry. I believe that facebook and other networking sites are very influential because of what we talked about, which was checking up on the person and picking fights. Its a very public thing and there is even a term for it "facebook official." If someone is facebook official then you know that they are dating. It is what our world has come to or not. Amazing. Office relationships should have rues because of distractions but there is no need ot be overly afffectionate at work. That can wait, flirting is fine but having sex is not the right thing to do, it's too public.

  9. Relationships in the work place have always been closesly scrutinized. I work in a restaurant and a girl I work with is in a serious relationship with our kitchen manager. Although he has no control over her job or schedule and has nothing to do with her pay, the general manager was not okay with this relationship. She was told that she had about a month to find a new job.
The thing is that barely any employees were aware that these two were even dating. They barely ever talked to each other and were never physical. It was a shock when we found out they were together. Although she had to find a new job, it did not affect their relationship, it actually got stronger.
The reason that rules like this are made is to prevent relationship drama in the workplace. No one wants anyone to be uncomfortable at work.

  10. I think overall, office relationships aren't something you should look for. I feel as if they ultimately cause strain on your work ethic and a strain in the relationship. You will constantly want to spend time with that person and you will. What more do you have to look forward to with that person outside of work when you spend the whole day, everyday with them? I think you should keep your relationship outside of work.

  11. Having your love life seperate from your work life seems like a normal relationship. Even if you date someone you work with, you should still see them outside of the office. I think it would be hard to have a significant love life at one's place of work.

I think employees are generally discouraged from spending time on social networking sites, such as facebook.

  12. i think in general, people shouldn't date in the work place but if it happens that they do they should just keep their love life separate from their work life. i mean they can have lunch but not holding hands walking through the hallway.especially people should be dating their boss or someone of higher authority because they tend to loss the respect they might have for them and when the relationship is over, it hard to go back to normal which means they will be quitting their job or something might happen and they might get fired.

  13. I don't think office romance is a kind of proper romance you should seek. When you apply for a job or internship, your boss will always expect you to be professional in the workplace and finish every job well. If you have a romantic relationship with someone, your main focus will probably change from your current job to your lover, or at least, you don't just concern about your job. Therefore, how can you be professional in your work. All in all, your romance will not be as wonderful as you expect. Also, your work will be impacted by your romance, too.

  14. I feel as if this article was targeted for both men and women. I think that the information in this article is valid; however, I think that it depends on the type of work that you do. For example, if you are President, don't make your significant other Vice president. I also see the point in having these rules. When tension is happening in a relationship, that could be obvious in the workplace and not only have a negative effect on your work, but on your colleagues work.

  15. The tension caused by work is often relieved by going home and spending time with your family. It seems that there would be extra stress involved when you end up taking work home and this could be bad and boil over and hurt other aspects of your relationship.

  16. I really don't see why there are rules against dating in the workplace. If someone you work with is either one of your best friends or even your girlfriend, you will be more happy at work and more willing to go, rather than waking up in the morning thinking about how much of a drag the next 8 hours is going to be. With happy workers, I believe that production and customer satisfaction will be increased because smiling and happiness is contageous. The only reason I can think of to possible have this rule is if their significant other is becoming a distraction to their work, which is a problem. Overall though, I feel as if dating in the workplace is not something that should be frowned upon.

  17. I think that these rules are so that an office romance does not affect the participants work, or the work of their coworkers. I think that two professional adults can manage a relationship in the workplace without it becoming a distraction. The only thing to worry about is if they have a tough break up, that drama could come into the workplace and cause a problem. As long as the people stay professional while dating, I don't think it is that big of a deal.
