There is one main appeal to the audience in the very beginning of the video. Anderson Cooper states “as you may have heard by now, maybe you haven’t, this time next week Prince William and Kate Middleton will be husband and wife.” I believe this quote shows how the speaker assumes most of the audience is aware that this wedding will be taking place, which I think is a fair assumption considering it is a very large event. I think that the creators of this video believe their audience is one that has heard about the wedding, but doesn’t know many details about it. I believe this because this video provides basic background information on the wedding that people who follow this subject closely would already be familiar with. Anderson Cooper also says something else that reveals what he believes his audience is by saying “the wedding will probably be pretty much of a lavish, royal affair, watched by people all over the world.” This shows that he thinks the event will be a huge affair and will appeal to people all over the world.
The speakers in this video position themselves simply as informative people, rather than in a position of power or authority. I also believe that the speaker considers himself as middle class, or at least not royalty, by the way he talks about Kate Middleton, a “commoner,” joining the royal family. He describes this as a “sensation,” which leads the audience to believe that he is glad a person from a middle class background can become royalty, while someone who is royalty might think this would weaken, or dilute the royal blood. However, I think he is in the upper part of this class because he does call Kate Middleton a “commoner” when later he says her parents were self-made millionaires.
I think that in this article, Anderson Cooper speaks from a commoner's perspective. Although he is upper class, he is not royalty and therefore cannot speak from a position of royalty. He is however, able to sympathize with Kate Middleton's situation, and is able to imagine the hardships involved in marrying into royalty, but also the benefits that go along with it. If Anderson Cooper were formal royalty, I feel that his opinion would change from one that thinks that the marriage is a great thing to an opinion that might condescend such a marriage that involves non royal blood. The position that one has definitely changes their opinions on a particular subject such as this one.
ReplyDeleteI agree for the most part in being that he did infer he was upper class by his use of "commoner". Although he doesnt flaunt it, he does come across a little as an upper class person.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that maybe the prince does regard his new wife as coming from a lower class than himself. what comes to mind for me is whether or not that attitude will affect their relationship later on. if one partner feels itself superior to the other in some way, to me it seems they are just asking for relationship trouble and it might just end up just being a big royal pain.
