Dahlem Sample Primary Sources

What Not to Wear- http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/what-not-to-wear-best-transformations/

This show really shows what we talked about in class with stereotyping people and labeling them based on what society has told us to. What Not to Wear is primarily based on telling women and men what is appropriate for them to wear in order to be "successful" or be "sexy." This clip in particular takes a woman that in societies eyes, dresses like a man and because she's a woman she needs to be wearing dresses and skirts.

Subway Commercial- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZmuTGFusIs

This commercial has a beautiful woman that goes up to a stereotypical "nerdy" guy and he is blown away by her beauty and thinks she's becoming his girlfriend when really she just wants what he has. This shows that when women in our society have a sort of control over men when they are what society labels as beauty. This commercial is all over the T.V. and millions of people have seen it, so obviously this sells the product.

  1. Both are good sources but I think I would choose the first one because I feel there is more detail/stuff to talk about in it. My first reaction of this is to say something along the lines that our culture is pushing us to wear different things and act a different way (in other words, not be who we are). After watching this, I noticed that it’s not a bad thing to change your style to what is "in" or considered beautiful. This whole clip really introduced how our cultural standards can be positive and useful. In many cases it allows us to be confident in ourselves, hardworking and joyful when we look more professional and "in-style".
There is so much more to talk about in this source and I think you can use this to your advantage when it comes to writing an 8 page paper. Maybe look for some repetition like we did today in class.
Your group 3 right? My e-mail is cameron.870@buckeyemail.osu.edu if you need to contact me. My sources are under the title "Cameron's Primary Sources" if you cannot find them.

  2. Why can't women dressed like men and men dressed like women. The so-called social rules limit the people's freedom of choosing what they like to wear. I think the most important and basic thing is that we want to dress in a confident and comfortable way. When you wear something that you think makes you feel comfortable but others think that's weird. Your confidence will probably be defeated a lot.Later, we will not dress something you like but strange in other people's eye. Finally, you are a member who abiding to the social dressing rule.
